Here at our little mini-farm we have run into a very good problem. We cannot keep eggs in stock! So we plan on scaling up the operation. Currently we have twelve chickens and 1 rooster. I have just ordered 15 more chickens, from Cackle Hatchery, for a total of 28. Right now we keep the chickens in chicken tractors. My plans are to develop 1.5 to 2 acres into a centralized chicken farm. I want a nice big actual chicken coop in the middle. The area will be a rectangle, fenced in to keep predators out. The rectangle will be partitioned off into separate paddocks. The chickens will rotate through each paddock eating fresh grass and bugs.
I also have found a home-grown guy who mills his own chicken feed for a lot less than what I can buy at the store. It may not be “organic” feed. But we will have more control of what we feed our girls(chickens). Keep in mind that the feed is a supplement. The main source of food is grass and bugs.
This is a cool little side business. It can be scaled up or back as much as we like. If things do not work out we can scale it back, sell some chickens, eat some chickens whatever we need to do. So we will see were all of this goes.
